About the Talking Stick Festival

The Talking Stick Festival (2002 – ongoing) is Western Canada’s premier Aboriginal performing arts festival. Presented annually over the past 15 years, it has allowed us to showcase an enormous range of work from emerging and established Aboriginal performing artists, as well as to seed future developments and collaborations. Initiated as a way to encourage artistic participation and experimentation, the Talking Stick Festival is now our flagship event and one of our greatest artistic successes.”

 

Position Summary

An opportunity to curate the annual exhibit, housed at the Roundhouse Community Art and Recreation Centre, the principal venue of the Talking Stick Festival.

This contract position will go to a self-motivated individual with extensive knowledge of Indigenous Visual Art. The hired individual will not only curate the twelve-day exhibition but will also coordinate the installation, liase with venue staff, and engage the artists whose work will be exhibited.

The Talking Stick Festival is a collaborative environment, strong communications skills and collective attitudes are a must.

 

Position Expectations

  • Manage and organize the event;
  • Liaise with artists involved;
  • Provide a curatorial concept and statement;
  • Participate in events relating to the TSF Visual Arts Exhibition, including but not limited to;
  • TSF Visual Arts Exhibition Opening and a Curators Walkthrough of the exhibit;
  • Determine the aesthetic of the event and determine any and all unifying factors that will make this component of the festival a coherent, comprehensive series;
  • Oversee the coordination of schedule and surrounding technical requirements;
  • Maintain necessary records of event;
  • Manage Exhibition Budget;

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Visual Art or Curatorial Arts, or minimum 3 years experience a practicing Indigenous visual artist or curator
  • Experience curating art exhibitions
  • Budget Management experience

Preference given to Indigenous applicants

Compensation

To be negotiated based on experience, industry standards, and projected workload.
