About the Show: Moonlodge is a remarkable one-woman show that deeply impacted an entire generation. Written by Margo Kane (Cree/Saulteaux), an interdisciplinary artist and a leading figure in Indigenous performing arts. Since its premiere in 1990, at the Women in View Festival, Moonlodge has captivated audiences around the world, touring throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia.
Moonlodge tells the story of a young girl named Agnes who hitchhikes to California in search of herself and home. Rooted in the child removals of the 60s scoop, which orchestrated the disruption of Indigenous families by child welfare services, Agnes grows up in an adopted family disconnected from her culture. It is in her journey through America that she finds herself and a way back home. Moonlodge is a Canadian classic that is inclusive to Aboriginal stories and reflects their histories and cultures. The show supports new school curriculum based on the Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement.
The production encourages students as well as families to discuss belonging, reconciliation, and how they can make their voices heard. Kane has said that she “hoped that Moonlodge will be a part of the healing of our people. We have survived tremendous losses with a sense of humour, dignity and honour. We are capable of determining our own future and that of our children.”
