Keeping the Fire Burning
Presented by Margo Kane (Joined by Squamish women, the Mathias Entertainers)
We are called to the Fire – a woman keeps it burning; she waits for others to join. While she waits, her memories drift around the fire. Her hopes and desires, her fears and her sorrows conjure stories for us to witness. She is not alone.
Mathias Entertainers
We are the descendants of Mary Agnes Capilano Joe, she was known as the Princess of Peace for her marriage of a warring tribe. Mary was a gifted noble woman, who was the first born daughter, she was a great storyteller and basket weaver. Mary was the holder of the chieftainship of Capilano who came from the Squamish Nation, they had a son named Mathias who is our grandfather, we are two generations from him. Our grandfather Mathias is known as Chief, entertainer and world renown carver. We the Mathias Entertainers stand together to sing, dance and entertain as he did.
