MatriArts Visual Arts Exhibition

From one generation to the next, artistic traditions of each First Nation have been passed from mother to daughter to granddaughter, in an unbroken line of tradition. Each generation carries on the practice, while also innovating, experimenting, and re-inventing… leaving their individual imprint within the practice.
MatriArts is a collective of Indigenous women who balance their artistic tradition with their contemporary practice, and whose stories of their respective artistic journeys provide a unique insight into the social, political, economic and cultural influences on their artistic practice, and the rapid transformations they have undergone over the generations.
Fifteen MatriArtists have been invited to exhibit ‘a piece I simply had to keep’, and to share with us their story for keeping this particular artistic work. MatriArtists range from emerging to practicing professionals and Elders. In this exhibition, MatriArtists brings together 15 artists from 5 different artistic traditions, and including contemporary works, with ideas around ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary defined by the artists in the sharing of their stories.
